EETT Funding Still in Jeopardy
December 14, 2005
As you all know, the President's proposed Federal 2006 budget eliminates all funding for the Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT) Act, originally funded as a part of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Although CUE members recently helped to win a victory by rejecting the Conference Committee bill, suggesting much lower funding levels for EETT, THE BATTLE IS NOT WON. Each of us still has the chance to impact the outcome. Letters to your Federal legislators are needed now. Of particular importance is to send letters to both of our California Senators, as well as your Representative in Congress. It is also important to include a letter to Representative Jerry Lewis from the 41st District, who we understand will be a major force in the upcoming negotiations.
As the budget debate continues, it is extremely important that all educators who value the positive impact that technology is having on both teaching and learning continue to make your Senators and Representatives aware of the huge negative impact these cuts will have on students in our State.
In order to assist you in making your voice heard, we have produced a Word mail merge letter that produces a customized letter to each member of Congress you select with a fax cover sheet, an Excel workbook with contact information for all members of the House and Senate to use as a data source, as well as two short illustrated tutorials, one for Mac and other for PC, on the steps you need to follow to make every thing work. Please feel free to modify this letter if you would like; however, do not feel that you have to. Just putting your name and title on the letter, your contact information on the fax sheet, printing the letters on your letterhead, and faxing them out will be very helpful. [Download merge tool]
It is important that you save all of the documents attached into a single folder on your local system prior to using them. You may also want to print out the short tutorial, MergeNow_Mac.doc or MergeNow_Win.doc, before you begin. Also, we have attempted to verify the contact information for all of the members of Congress; however, if you find errors, please let me know so that the data can be corrected.
Finally, if you are not certain who your representatives in Congress are, the link below has an excellent lookup system that only requires your mailing address and zip code.
