Common Sense Education Workshops

Students grow up in a digital world with the potential for communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creation. Yet schools face challenges concerning behavioral and ethical issues that arise from students’ use of technology, such as cyberbullying, inappropriate sharing, and plagiarism. Digital citizenship is an essential 21st-century skill that guides students to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly in our digital world. Not only is digital citizenship an essential component of any school’s technology program, it’s also necessary for CIPA compliance and schools receiving E-rate funding.

In this workshop, participants will learn about essential skills for digital citizenship, how to teach students these skills, and how to create a positive school culture around technology. Participants will learn about Common Sense Education’s K-12 Digital Literacy & Citizenship Curriculum, available online as downloadable lessons or as interactive iBook Textbooks. The research-based curriculum was developed with guidance from Dr. Howard Gardner at the GoodPlay Project at Harvard. The curriculum includes easy-to-use lessons, student videos, engaging activities, assessments, and parent resources, and is adaptable to low-tech and high-tech classrooms. And the curriculum is offered at no cost to schools. Participants will:

  • Learn about the challenges and opportunities students face in a digital world.
  • Sample hands-on lesson activities from the Digital Literacy & Citizenship Curriculum, watch videos of lessons being taught, and identify connections to Common Core and 21st Century Learning.
  • Explore digital citizenship implementation options and curricular connections.
  • Understand how to effectively engage families and build a positive home-school connection around technology.
  • Assess and plan how they will include digital citizenship in their curriculum.
