Dr. Chris Dede
Dr. Chris Dede is the Timothy E. Wirth Professor in Learning Technologies at Harvard's Graduate School of Education. His fields of scholarship include emerging technologies, policy, and leadership. His funded research includes a grant from the National Science Foundation to aid middle school students learning science via shared virtual environments and a Star Schools grant from the U.S. Department of Education to help high school students with math and literacy skills using wireless mobile devices to create augmented reality simulations.

In 2007, he was honored by Harvard University as an outstanding teacher. Chris has served as a member of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Foundations of Educational and Psychological
Assessment, a member of the U.S. Department of Education's Expert Panel on Technology, and International Steering Committee member for the Second International Technology in Education Study. He serves on Advisory Boards and Commissions for PBS TeacherLine, the Partnership for 21st Century Skills, the Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center, and several federal research grants. His co-edited book, Scaling Up Success: Lessons Learned from Technology- based Educational Improvement, was published by Jossey-Bass in 2005.

A second volume he edited, Online Professional Development for Teachers: Emerging Models and Methods, was published by the Harvard Education Press in 2006.

21st Century Learning Styles and Mobile Technologies

Emerging interactive media are shaping users' attributes and social patterns into "neomillennial" learning styles: Today's students seek situations that interweave face-to face interactions with shared virtual experiences. In particular, wireless mobile devices (cell phones, portable gaming platforms, personal digital assistants) provide the opportunity to overlay digital data and simulated experience as students interact with the physical world. This session describes lessons learned from two educational "augmented reality" projects and discusses implications for instructional design.

River City: How Immersion in Virtual Worlds Helps Real Students

River City is a science curriculum, grades 6 to 9, based on a virtual world rather like the Internet games many students find so engaging. The curriculum is designed to help all students learn, but particularly low performing pupils, paradoxically by giving them more complex academic challenges rather than simplifying instruction. This talk will demonstrate and discuss how taking on a digital identity in an immersive, collaborative simulation can help real students to learn sophisticated inquiry skills and deep, standards based subject matter.

21st Century Skills, Education, and Economic Development for Global Knowledge-based Workplaces

Advanced information and communications technologies are creating a "flat" world in which creative knowledge generation is the key resource, reshaping economic development strategies and educational approaches. This talk describes key 21st century skills that students must attain, as well as emerging interactive media (such as wikis and sociosemantic networking) through which educators can foster these skills.

Peg Portscheller
Peg Portscheller is a Professional Development Associate for The Leadership and Learning Center, a nationally renowned education consulting and publishing company
based in Denver and Boston. Peg has a breadth and depth of education leadership experience that is unequalled. She is one of the few educators in the country who has been both a union leader, serving as a state president for two terms, and a superintendent. In her tenure as both a teacher and a superintendent, Peg boasts "educator of the year" and "superintendent of the year" honors.

In the course of her "almost four decades" in education, Peg has taught at the middle and high school levels as well as in the higher education arena. In addition, she has rich experiences in leadership, curriculum, instruction, staff development, assessment and data, and system reform. She served for 15 years as a member of the board of McREL (Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning) and led their policy work during the reauthorization of the federal No Child Left Behind act. Peg also served as the Executive Director of the Colorado Association of School Executives and as the Executive in Residence at Adams State in Colorado.
Peg is a skilled presenter, facilitator, speaker and trainer. She has been active in the profession at all levels including having served as the state affiliate ASCD president in who different states as well as serving as a leader in Phi Delta Kappa, the American Association of University Women, and the American Association of School Administrators.

Her experiences in very diverse school systems give her credibility with all audiences and groups and her warmth and sense of humor put people at ease while inviting them to explore new possibilities. As Peg puts it, "This is first and foremost a 'business' of the heart. When the heart is engaged, the mind can deal with changes that need to be made in service to kids."

Educational Leadership at 'Twitch' Speed

The interactive break-out session will give attendees the chance to get some real-time, hands-on advice on how to gather, read and interpret data to get the most from students. Peg will also help administrators use proven strategies for effective educational leadership. This session will show how technology can be integrated into not only the assessment side of high-stakes testing, but into the instructional side as well.
