This workshop, by two leaders in the STEM education field, explores how to stimulate and support interest and understanding in these fields with the use of a variety of software, much of which is available for no cost. Participants will all receive CD's containing the open source STEM titles, and will get to explore STEM topics themselves in an environment that supports inquiry and project-based learning. As explained on moodle.org, "Moodle is a course management system (CMS) - a free, Open Source software package designed using sound pedagogical principles, to help educators create effective online learning communities." This hands-on workshop will allow users to take Moodle for a test drive. Experience an existing Moodle classroom and then learn how to get started on creating your own Moodle site. You will learn how to create an online classroom, upload files, setup calendars, include podcasts and video, and assorted other features built into a Moodle site. Come prepared with files (Word, Excel, etc.) to upload to Moodle. Each attendee will walk away with a CD with all the necessary files and programs to setup Moodle on a stand-alone computer. In order for students with disabilities to make educational progress they must have access to general curriculum. This is particular problem for struggling readers who are required to read materials written at or above their independent reading level. The purpose of this workshop is to provide participants with a collection of strategies that can be used by teachers and students to make text accessible. With the right tools and a few skills, you will learn how to (1) locate or create digital reading materials, (2) manipulate digital text to alter the cognitive difficulty and accessibility of a specific text, (3) create an audio version of any text document, (4) create multilingual text and audio versions of any text document, and (5) create reading comprehension assessments to document a students access and progress when using accessible text resources. Concluding activities will focus on how these tools and strategies might be implemented in an assistive technology and/or universal design for learning service delivery framework. Intended audience is Special education teachers, paraprofessionals, general education teachers, curriculum directors, assistive technology specialists, and others interested in the accessibility of text for students in the bottom quartile of reading performance. The grade level focus of this workshop will be on grades 4-12 with an emphasis on reading in the content areas. Bring your own laptop lab
