CUEtoYOU Featured Workshops, Fall 2007

October is a great month for thinking about professional development... everyone has settled in from the start of the school year, and there are many productive months ahead to plan for.

If you're lucky enough to live in or near the Cochella Valley you can take advantage of the monthly CUEtoYOU workshops being hosted by Cahuilla CUE at the Palm Springs Unified School District professional development center. Visit the following link for details: http://www.cue.org/2007/10/18#a469

However, if you'd like to bring CUE to your area, you can host your own series of CUEtoYOU workshops this year. CUEtoYOU is currently featuring three workshop packages, two registration options, and one easy process for scheduling events.

Three Featured Workshop Packages

The Read/Write Web Series: This package includes three workshops meant to introduce teachers to powerful and easy to use read/write web tools. "Blog If You Love Learning" is an introduction to weblogs in education, including classroom applications and how to use them for your own professional development. "Wiki While You Work" is an introduction to wikis in education. Wikis are websites that visitors can edit, making them perfect for collaboration between students or colleagues. "Broadcasting for All" is an introduction to podcasting, which allows students and teachers to create and share their own online Radio or "tv" shows.

Additional read/write web topics can include RSS, social bookmarking, social networking, social microblogging,   and more. CUE also offers a variety of classes based on the Google Teacher Academies.

The Multimedia Series: This package includes three workshops meant to introduce teachers to powerful and easy to use media creation tools. "You've Got To See It To Learn It" is an introduction to using iPhoto (Mac) or Picasa (Win) to organize, edit, and share images. Then "The Classroom Recording Studio" is an introduction to using GarageBand (Mac) or Audacity (Win) to record, edit, and mix audio, including music and the spoken word. Finally, "Lights, Cameras, Learning" is an introduction to using iMovie (Mac) or Movie Maker (Win) to create and edit video. All three workshops focus on using multi-media to differentiate instruction and to support project-based learning.

Additional multi-media topics can include high end-video editing applications (such as Final Cut Pro), advanced podcasting, screencasting, streaming media, and more.

Equipment-Based Series: This package includes three workshops that follow the "learn it, take it, use it" model. Participants learn how to use a new piece of equipment in the workshop... and then take the equipment with them back to their schools to use it with their students. "Digital Camera Workshop" includes a new digital camera and introduces teachers to the camera, techniques for using it in the classroom, and software for organizing, editing, and sharing images. "iPod in Education" includes an iPod with microphone attachment and introduces ways the iPod can be used to access, manage, and even create academic content. "Google Earth, GPS, and Geocaching in the Classroom" includes a handheld GPS unit and introduces participants to ways that hyper-locality can enhance and extend students' learning experiences using technology such as Google Earth and activities such as Geocaching.

Additional equipment-based topics can include podcasting (with a USD microphone), the projector workshop, and even the "hybrid" workshop, which includes a Macbook loaded with Mac OS X and Windows.

If you are interested in a particular topic that is not featured here, reply to this message so we can discuss your needs. CUE can draw on an extensive list of conference presenters and educational technology leaders to supplement your own professional development resources.

Each workshop is a three-hour hands-on experience facilitated by a CUE Lead Learner. The cost is $100 per participant.

Two Registration Options:

Group Registration: With group registration your organization serves as the client. You select the workshop topics and determine the dates, times, and locations. You let CUE know how many people will be attending, but the roster is completely up to you - and you can handle registration any way you like. CUE then invoices your organization directly.

Individual Registration: With individual registration your organization serves merely as the host of the event. You still select the topics and determine the dates, times, and locations. Then CUE facilitates an online registration process through which individuals can sign up for (and pay for) specific workshops. Your organization hosts the event, but is never invoiced for the workshop.

Note: Individuals registering online need to be current CUE members. If they are not current or need to join CUE for the first time, they can update their membership at the same time they register.

One Easy Process

Select a featured workshop package, select a registration option, and then contact us to schedule an event. That's all it takes to get the ball rolling. Once the critical details are agreed upon, CUE will generate a formal proposal, which if signed can also serve as a letter of agreement between CUE and your organization. CUE also provides a checklist to help with preparation and facilitation of the event and the CUEtoYOU coordinator will work with you through every step - from connecting with the lead learner to reviewing evaluation data... and planning your next CUEtoYOU event.
