Google's Mission

Google's corporate mission is to "organize the worldís information and make it universally accessible and useful." CUE believes this is in alignment with educatorsí ultimate mission to "help students access and use information."

Computer Using Educators, Inc. (CUE)

Computer-Using Educators, Inc. is a nonprofit educational corporation founded in 1978. CUE's goal is to advance student achievement through technology in all disciplines from preschool through college. With an active current membership of thousands of educational professionals, CUE supports many regional affiliates and Special Interest Groups. CUE Conferences are California's premier educational technology events. CUE is the largest organization of its type in the West and one of the largest in the United States.

CUE Professional Learning Services

CUE's custom professional learning program, CUE, provides powerful professional development solutions for schools, districts, and other educational institutions. CUE "Lead Learners" are educators drawn from CUE's exceptional roster of conference presenters, experts and thought leaders. These are not merely instructors or trainers. CUE embraces the belief that the best leaders are also learners. Since 2005, the CUE program has offered a wide variety of workshops across the United States and around the world.

The Google Teacher Academy

In 2006, CUE was involved with the creation of the prestigious Google Teacher Academy (GTA) and the Google Certified Teacher (GTC) community. Over the past five years, CUE has been contracted by Google to coordinate production of all twelve Google Teacher Academies. These events have been produced in six states, the District of Columbia, London England, and Sydney Australia. Variations of the GTA have included one focused on educational leaders (including principals, technology directors, and superintendents), and two focused on an international cohort of educators.

Google Workshop for Educators

In order to meet the greater demand for professional development similar to the Google Teacher Academy, CUE has for the past two years also offered a Google Workshop for Educators (GWE) to schools, districts, and other educational institutions. Client organizations have included county, state, and regional offices of education - as well as colleges and universities. Several variations of the GWE are available. The most popular variation is the Google Workshop for Administrators (GWA). A Google Migration Summit for system administrators and chief technology officers is also available, and CUE has also produced a Google Workshop for Students. The GWE has been offered in a variety of formats including one, two, and three-day face-to-face experiences and has been produced in 26 states and three Canadian provinces. The GWE is also offered as a five-part webinar series.

Google Apps EDU Certified Training

CUE has a long history of providing training and support to larger clients, such as school districts or higher-education institutions, and now CUE is one of the inaugural Google Apps EDU Certified Training Organizations. CUE employs dozens of Google Certified Teachers (GCTs) who are also Google Apps for Education Certified Trainers. CUE also draws on the expertise of a broad membership, including many CTOs who have implemented Google Apps in their organizations. In addition, partnerships with Google Apps Certified Resellers make CUE uniquely positioned to provide the ìwhole packageî of professional development and IT implementation services.

Format and Pricing

CUE's Google Apps for Education Certificatied Training is available in a variety of formats:

  • A one-hour Presentation or Keynote focuses on one or more tools and starts at the flat rate of $1500.
  • A three-hour hands-on workshop covers one application (such as Gmail or Google Docs) and is just $175 per participant. The focus is on providing participants with a positive hands-on experience. This includes materials, swag, and membership in the Google Workshop for Educators Network.
  • The most popular format is a full-day (six-hour) hands-on workshop, which is an overview of all six core tools, with a particular focus on four (usually Gmail, Calendar, Docs, and Sites). The full-day workshop is only $275 per participant. This includes materials, swag, and membership in the Google Workshop for Educators Network.
  • A two-day hands-on workshop is available in several variations that allow either more time per tool, the opportunity for participants to complete a proof-of-concept project, or exposure to ìeven moreî Google tools (such as Search or Maps). Two-day workshops are just $425 per participant. This includes materials, swag, and membership in the Google Workshop for Educators Network.
  • A three-day hands-on workshop includes six three-hour workshops, with each one dedicated to a different core tool in the Google Apps Suite. This comprehensive training is available for only $525 per participant. This includes materials, swag, and membership in the Google Workshop for Educators Network.
  • Interactive Webinars are available for $100 per participant per tool in a 90 minute format (or $300 per participant for all 6 core sessions).

Additional formats and customizations (such as 90 minute workshops or a longer series of workshops) are also available, as are train-the-trainer events.

Prices are ìall inclusiveî of materials, Google SWAG, lead learners, and domestic travel. In addition, all participants who complete one of these training experiences are given access to the Google Workshops for Educators Network (GWEN), an online community focused on supporting educators as they learn more about the power of Google to drive student learning. This network allows participants to extend their learning beyond the day(s) of the workshop.

Note: Though there is no better preparation for the certification process than these workshops, certification as a Google Apps EDU Qualified Individual is not included in these professional development packages. Workshop participants must study for and complete the qualification tests independently. The six tests cost $15 each (for a total of $90).

Facilities

CUE's Google Apps for Education Certified Training can be hosted at your facility in any of the following four formats:

  • Single Lab Option - The workshop is hosted in a single fixed computer lab with Windows, Mac, or Linux computers for all participants (in addition to a projector and screen for the Lead Learners). Capacity depends on the lab, but 20-30 participants is typical.
  • Single Room BYOL Option - The workshop is hosted in a single classroom with tables, power strips, and strong wifi (in addition to a projector and screen for the Lead Learners). Participants bring their own laptop. Capacity depends on the room, but 20-30 participants is typical.
  • Mutiple Lab Option - The workshop is hosted a facility, such as a school site, with multiple fixed computer labs (each with Windows, Mac, or Linux computers for all participants and a projector & screen for the Lead Learners). A large meeting room, such as a theater or auditorium, where all participants can meet is also ideal.  Participants begin in the large room and then rotate through the labs for "breakout sessions" with specific Lead Learners. Capacity of 50-150 participants is typical, but larger events are also possible.
  • Multiple Room BYOL Option - The workshop is hosted in a facility with one large meeting room, such as a theater or auditorium, and several smaller classrooms with tables, power strips, and strong wifi (in addition to a projector and screen for the Lead Learners).  Participants bring their own laptop and then rotate between the large room and the smaller classrooms for "breakout sessions" with specific Lead Learners. Capacity of 50-150 participants is typical, but larger events are also possible.

Additional formats and customizations (such as 90 minute workshops or a longer series of workshops) are also available, as are train-the-trainer events.

Effective Professional Development

CUE professional learning is renown for it's effectiveness. CUE believes that a passionate student is a learning student, and the same is true for teachers. CUE Lead Learners aim to tap into participants passions for teaching and learning in every workshop. Five key philosophies help make this goal a reality:

  • The Lead Learner Philosophy: CUE workshops are not led by mere trainers or facilitators. Rather, workshop leaders consider themselves to be "lead learners." After all, the best leaders are also learners. There is wisdom in the Native American proverb, "He who learns from one who is learning, drinks from a flowing river." CUE Lead Learners are passionate about what they are learning - and the sessions they are leading. Their enthusiasm is contagious.
  • The Face-to-Face Philosophy: In today's world of blogs and podcasts, information transmission is no longer an excuse for a face-to-face meeting. Itís a terrible waste. The workshop has to be "better than the podcast." CUE Lead Learners respect the participants in each session by tapping into their experience, their passions, and their creative energy. CUE workshops include many opportunities for interaction, and always include links where participants can access additional "how-to" details and other support after the session.
  • The Passionate Philosophy: An engaged student is a learning student, and the same is true for educators in professional development. CUE lead learners don't hesitate to connect participants' learning with their passions outside of school and work. Participants are invited to share ways they can use what they are learning for personal as well as professional goals. Participants need to care about what they are learning - so CUE workshops are relevant to their work, and ultimately, their life.
  • The Kindergarten Philosophy: Each positive experience a student has in kindergarten is a $1 deposit in their "love of learning" bank, but every negative experience is a $10 withdrawal. The same is true in educational technology and professional development. CUE Lead Learners ensure that workshop participants enjoy each session, even if it means covering less material. Also, Lead Learners are clear that participants "practice with a purpose." Ultimately, Lead Learners know their job is still to help participants be the best people (and best educators) they can be.
  • The Race Car Philosophy: A race car driver doesn't look at where he is - that would be folly even in an ordinary car. A race car driver doesnít even look at where heís going. He looks as many turns down the road as possible, because the way he goes into one turn will affect the way he comes out of it and enters the next turn - and thus the way he comes into the next straight away. Though CUE Lead Learners always offer participants something they can "use on Monday", they also challenge participants to think "several turns down the road" to what theyíd like their practice to be like in several months or years.

CUE recognizes that the successful implementation of any educational technology requires a cultural change in your organization. With over three decades experience with helping schools, districts, and other educational institutions manage the implementation of new technologies, CUE is uniquely prepared to help manage the organizational change (including professional development and IT support services) necessary for your staff to successfully adopt the Google Apps suite.
