| KEYNOTE - Deneen Frazier Bowen |
Deneen Frazier Bowen began her work in education by blending her passions for teaching and acting by becoming a high school theater teacher. Since then, she has worked with educators all over the country to harness technology for better learning: both their students' and their own. Beginning in educational technology as a software designer, she quickly recognized a strong need for school-wide visioning, professional development, and curriculum integration. Her book, The Internet for Your Kids, set the stage for her decade of work training teachers to use technology in the curriculum. Her work ranges from focusing on the professional development needs of teachers at one particular school - San Francisco University High School and Ephesus Elementary School in Chapel Hill, NC - to grounding the work of educational technology companies such as BellSouth Foundation, Apple Computer, bigchalk.com and Teachscape.
Deneen is the author of The Internet for Your Kids, founder and director of ActWith, offering uniquely live interactive learning experiences by creating characters that engage audiences in exploring the possibilities within and around them.

Deneen's Follow-up Session on Friday, March 2
THE POWER OF STORY - DIGITAL STYLE
For centuries people have been telling stories to educate the younger generation about their world - historical stories, cultural stories, personal stories. Today, students "digital natives" are educating the older generation "digital immigrants" with their stories of growing up in a digital world. What if you could help students claim their own stories using digital tools? What if you could communicate with students at a deeper level by supporting and listening to their stories?
These stories can help school communities connect in new ways to solve the new challenges of the digital era. In her keynote, she presents three digital stories, two authored by students and one by a teacher. In this session, Deneen guides you through a deeper exploration of the development, creation and uses of digital stories to help students express their ideas, dreams and concerns.

TOOLS OF THE CREATIVITY TRADE
Peter says: "Learning is never-ending journey. All of us, children and grown up children, are participants on a voyage of self-discovery. Every one of us is unique and has a right to be inspired in ways appropriate to his/her own abilities, talents, and interests." There are a lot of educational goals we all share. These foundation skills provide the building blocks upon which a lifetime of learning can be built. FableVision supports content and activities that strengthen those basic skills, including writing, reading, comprehension, articulation of ideas, research, and problem solving. We also believe that well-educated students and adults are not complete without less "test-able" skills, such as self-determination, guiding principles, appreciation of culture, goal-setting, creativity, community service, and a natural desire to learn and improve. Peter and his team will share FableVision's line of latest products that focus on skill building as well as fostering creativity.

RSS: Connecting Ideas and Knowledge
RSS is a powerful yet fairly untapped tool that educators can use to easily track many sources of information and knowledge. But it's also evolving into an effective way to connect people and ideas in ways that we've been unable to before. Using RSS, we can not only read what others write, we can read what they read, and even read what they create in easy, time-saving ways. This session will take a look at the tools and strategies that can make RSS an integral part of every educator's professional development and practice.
Losing Your Digital Accent
Marc Prensky says that students are Digital Natives while most educators are veritable Digital Immigrants who were not born in to technology and will always keep their accents. We print out our e-mail, prefer plain paper to digital paper, and still use phone books to look up numbers. This divide makes bringing technology to our students more difficult, and our accents many times get in the way of our use of technology. But accents are easier to lose than you might think, especially when all sorts of constructivist technologies are lowering the bar to entry. This workshop is filled with ideas and hands on suggestions to help educators start speaking the natives' language a bit more clearly.

CALIFORNIA SPOTLIGHT: Leslie Fisher
|
Leslie Fisher's interest in technology began while studying music at the University of Southern California. She quickly realized the value of utilizing computers for music mixing and thus began a personal discovery process where technology replaced the flute and brought her nationally celebrated talents to us today.
After graduating from USC with a Business and Marketing degree in 1989, she went to an Apple Computer Inc. subsidiary where she was in charge of the education marketing and training program. Wanting more technical experience, Leslie left this company in 1992 and joined Apple Computer Inc. as a Senior Systems Engineer in K-12 education, providing technology solutions to school districts across Southern California.
When the Internet took off in 1994, Leslie was one of the first Apple employees assigned to study Internet growth and implementation. Due to her knowledge of web design, server implementation and Internet Resources, she became the Internet resource in the Educational Western Region.
In 1997, Leslie was roadkill on Apple's road to recovery and was part of their massive lay off. Leslie planned to spend most of her huge severance package golfing and waiting a few months to look for a job. The day after her layoff, her phone began to ring with Apple customers requesting consulting. Before she could say "fore," Fisher Technologies Inc. was created to help educators with their technology implementation and decisions.
Fisher Technologies Inc. is now a nationwide Corporation providing web design, consulting, training and presentation services to school districts and companies.
