CUE to Honor Innovative Educators with LeRoy’s Big Idea Contest at National Conference

November 19, 2015

--One Winner Will Be Named new Finkel Fellow and Awarded $2,500--

Walnut Creek, Calif., November 19, 2015 -- CUE announced today that it has created a new approach to the LeRoy Finkel Fellowship Awards program, which honors the life and work of an early CUE pioneer and irascible source of inspiration for the organization. LeRoy's Big Idea - Lesson Design Master Class will follow the General Session & Keynote on Friday, March 18 and will feature six participants vying for the chance to become the new Finkel Fellow by sharing innovative and creative approaches to education with a panel of judges and the audience.

Why this approach? According to Jon Corippo, CUE’s Director of Academic Innovation, this type of forum for sharing ideas is something LeRoy would have enjoyed. “All the stories I hear, LeRoy was passionate about sharing helpful information. In his CUE newsletter column, ‘FYI,’ he would always include ideas he thought people didn’t know. The fact that innovative educators are competing and sharing techniques in his name honors his legacy.”

LeRoy’s Big Idea functions in two parts. The first is an open call to all CUE members, who simply need to submit a one-minute, high energy, creative video demonstrating how they could use $500 to spend in their classrooms. This must be a BIG idea and one that could translate to even greater possibilities with additional funding. Six educators will be chosen based on these videos, and each will win $500 as well as a complimentary registration to the CUE 2016 National Conference.

The second part of the contest involves the six finalists competing on stage at the CUE conference for $2,500 to fund their big idea and to be named the newest LeRoy Finkel Fellow. A panel of judges and the audience will determine the winner, and he/she will celebrate this achievement by attending the ISTE conference in Denver, courtesy of CUE.

Instructions and information on submitting the videos and other Big Idea contest rules can be found on the CUE website at cue.org/leroyfinkel.

About LeRoy Finkel
In 1978, LeRoy Finkel joined a group of dedicated educators to create CUE, now nationally recognized for its leadership in the promoting technology integration across the curriculum. LeRoy recognized that technology would become a major factor in the educational process. He maintained an informed perspective and appreciation of the long view that he always eagerly and generously shared as coach and mentor in his books and articles where he praised good products, sniped at bad ones, and scrutinized every aspect of educational computing constantly reminding us to stay focused on the kids and the classroom, on teaching and learning, and on never being satisfied with anything but meeting the highest standards of excellence.
