Advancing Student Achievement Through Technology
Steven Glyer
For the past 28 years, I have participated in educational technology, in both the private and public sector; as a teacher; a county office program specialist; an account executive for Apple Computer; a manager and marketing director for Pioneer and presently as the Director of Educational Technology for the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. I am excited about having the chance to serve you as a CUE board member. While technology in education could have been considered optional even 10 years ago, its absence is no longer tolerable. With works like Thomas Friedman’s The World is Flat coming on the national scene, the structure of education as each of us has known it, is no longer sufficient to help students prepare for a world of work and learning in the 21st century. My recent trip to China where I attend ISTE’s first educational technology conference in that nation has given me first hand experience of this new reality. Initiatives such as the redesign of high schools, online education, video conferencing, podcasting, web-based curriculum and one-to-one laptop programs are today’s reality. These are the initiatives that I am passionate about. These are the ones to which I am committed to providing leadership.
As a CUE Board member, I will commit myself to creating strategic change in our education system, pressing for a focus on 21st century learning skills, with clear metrics to help determine success.
